C is for . . . Cabin Counsellor. Charles, having been at camp since he was eleven, has risen to the role of counsellor in the Hephaestus cabin after his predecessor was declared M.I.A as a result of partaking in a quest. Charles has been the counsellor of his cabin now for two years, leading his siblings not only in the forge but elsewhere in camp for example, anytime Capture the Flag comes round. Charles takes his position with a sense of pride and works hard at it, just as he would with anything else he is challenged with.
H is for . . . Hephaestus, the God of the Forge aka the father of Charles. Hephaestus was never there for Charles growing up due to the fact that he is an Olympian and so was either on Mount Olympus atop the Empire State or tending to anything going wrong within his domain of power. Like a lot of demigods, this caused a bit of a hole in Charles’ heart, wondering why his dad left and why he never came back, becoming accustom to this quite early on. In saying that, his mother always comforted the boy whilst unsure herself of the answers. It wasn’t until Charles was eleven that a discovery of his paternity was made due to a satyr protector turning up at the Beckindorf apartment and insisting on bringing him to camp.
A is for . . . Acrophobia (otherwise known as a fear of heights). A lot of Hephaestus’ children are born with the innate fear regardless of their own personal experiences of heights. It has just been a part of their DNA ever since Hera threw Hephaestus off of Mount Olympus in the Ancient times due to his appearance. The whole acrophobia thing doesn't overly affect Charles personally but there are small elements of it here and there if he ever is up in the air (which is hardly ever). There was one bad incident though at the age of seven, whenever Charles was on an aeroplane for the first time (he was travelling with his mum to see family in Washington). He went into a minor panic attack just as the plane started its ascent and had to be calmed down by both his mother and one of the stewards working on that flight.
R is for . . . Recluse. Charles, as mentioned, shares some of his father’s opinions in that he likes the company of machines more than he would with that of people but having been raised by his mother in Michigan, it is due to his shyness rather than the disappointment with life in general as is the case with Hephaestus. He does think there is a sense of difficulty with people but this isn’t to say that he doesn’t attempt to interact with them. He would kindly take anything people brings him in need of a blacksmith’s work. If you're talking to him, you can see that he is more withdrawn than most people which makes it even more important when he does speak out and creates this sense of importance, making the listener feel a greater need to be tuned into what he is saying, regardless of the topic. Over the years, Charles has developed friendships with other campers and is very kind towards people.
L is for . . . Love of materials. Like a lot of Hephaestus’ children, Charles just has an innate ability for playing with any kind of material at hand and will within minutes if not seconds have a new machine or device prototype in the palm of his hand. This love of material goes further as Charles is more than happy to create or work things for other demigods or anyone who asks really. The desire for materials like metal has always been with Charles. To him, it has always been instinctive since the day he was born.
E is for . . . Embers from the camp’s very own forge. The Forge is where Charles spends all of his time unless he is with Silena or in his cabin sleeping. It is here that the demigod feels most at home, with his fingers wrapped around the metals and what-not enabling him to create the next best construction. It is here that Charles has developed the huge physique that he has had since birth inheriting such traits from his father including hands that are “like catcher's mitts” (his hands were hardened over time from being the forge for so long).
No matter what you need forged, chances are, Charles could do it. All he asks for is a little time to work. Not that it would take long for a son of Hephaestus to mend something mechanical. Things like this cannot be rushed unless it is a special case and thus must be finished a.s.a.p.
S is for . . . Silena, the object of Charles apparently-not-so-secret crush. In Charles' opinion, she is the most beautiful girl at camp (well she is a daughter of Aphrodite) but he just can't seem to gather up all of his courage and ask her out. Personally, Charles would ask her out if he could but it just makes him so nervous. Even thinking about it makes the demigod sick to the stomach. When Charles sees Silena, nausea starts acting up in his stomach and the hardened hands start to badly shake out of apprehension (and as a blacksmith, constancy in the hands whilst managing hot materials is critical). Not to mention the fact that Charles’ heartbeat goes through the roof when he sees her.
